Reusing a Job Token for AEWV Workers: What Employers Need to Know

At VisaSector, we understand the importance of keeping your workers on the job and compliant with visa regulations. For employers who hire workers on an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), the ability to reuse a job token can provide flexibility when their employee’s visa is nearing its expiry.

What is a Job Token?

A job token is a critical part of the AEWV process, allowing employers to support the visa application for an employee staying in the same role and location. If your AEWV worker is nearing the end of their current visa but still has time left to stay in New Zealand, you might be able to reuse the same job token to extend their stay.

When Can You Reuse a Job Token?

If your employee is nearing the end of their current AEWV and they have not reached the total duration of time they can stay in New Zealand, you can reuse their job token for another AEWV. For example, if your employee has a 2-year AEWV but their total stay can be 3 years, you can apply for a new 1-year AEWV to continue employing them.

To qualify for reusing a job token, the following conditions must be met:

  • You must continue to employ the worker in the same job
  • The worker must stay in the same location
  • The pay offered must be the same or more than the conditions listed on their current AEWV.

Additionally, to reuse the job token, the worker must have applied for their current AEWV (or Job Change) on or before 9 March 2025.

Who Cannot Reuse a Job Token?

Certain conditions restrict the reuse of a job token. If your worker’s AEWV was applied for on or after 10 March 2025, they will no longer be eligible to reuse their job token.

Moreover, if your employee applied for their AEWV on or before 9 March 2025, the following restrictions apply:

  • They were paid less than NZD $29.66 per hour when they obtained their AEWV.
  • Their AEWV was for one of the following roles:
    • Meat process worker
    • Seafood process worker
    • Snowsport instructor
    • Mountain or glacier guide
    • Snow groomer
    • Outdoor adventure instructor
    • Outdoor adventure guides (nec)
    • Whitewater rafting guide
    • Parachute rigger
    • Ski technician
    • Snow maker

What Happens After 9 March 2025?

If your worker’s AEWV application was submitted on or after 10 March 2025, you will no longer be able to reuse their job token. In this case, a new job token will need to be applied for through a job check application, or you can provide them with an unused job token.
