VisaSector is excited to share a significant update about part-time work rights for migrant school leavers, effective from 1 October 2024.
What’s New?
Starting 1 October, migrant high school leavers awaiting the decision on their family residence visa applications will gain enhanced access to part-time work rights.
What You Need to Know:
- Current Visitor Visa Holders: If you already have a visitor visa, you can apply to modify your visa conditions to include work rights starting 1 October.
- New Visitor Visa Applicants: From 1 October, you can request part-time work rights as part of your visitor visa application.
Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for part-time work rights, you must:
Be an applicant with an active application for one of the following residence visas:
- Dependent Child Resident Visa
- Skilled Migrant Category Visa
- Straight to Residence Visa
- Work to Residence Visa
- Care Workforce Work to Residence Visa
- Transport Sector Work to Residence Visa
Have or be eligible to apply for:
- Child of a Worker Visitor Visa, or
- Child of a New Zealander Visitor Visa
Be between 18 to 24 years old, or 17 years old with proof of high school completion.
Work Rights Overview:
- Between 1 February and 30 November: You may work up to 20 hours per week.
- Between 1 December and 31 January: You may work up to 40 hours per week.
These new work rights align with those available to Year 12 and 13 students on a Dependent Child Student Visa, providing equitable opportunities for all migrant school leavers.
