To address peak workforce demands, Immigration New Zealand has introduced changes for low-skilled workers applying for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) from certain Pacific countries. These changes, effective from 3 November 2024, provide a temporary English language exemption for eligible applicants.
Who Is Eligible?
This exemption applies to low-skilled AEWV applicants who:
- Are from Pacific countries where English testing centres are unavailable. Are citizens of:
- American Samoa
- Australia
- Fiji
- Kiribati
- Marshall Islands
- Micronesia
- Nauru
- Palau
- Papua New Guinea
- Pitcairn Islands
- Samoa
- Solomon Islands
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- Vanuatu
- Cook Islands or Niue (not traveling on a New Zealand passport)
Exemption Period
- The exemption is valid for applications made between 3 November 2024 and 31 January 2025.
Why This Change?
The policy aims to help meet New Zealand’s workforce needs during its busiest period by facilitating the entry of low-skilled Pacific workers. It acknowledges the lack of accessible English testing facilities in some Pacific nations.
